CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Western Carolina women’s soccer team returns to the pitch on Sunday afternoon as the Catamounts welcome in-state directional rival East Carolina for a 1 p.m. contest at the Catamount Soccer Complex.
The match will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with free live stats available on CatamountSports.com.
WCU is 2-2-2 after its Thursday night home match against archrival Appalachian State was cancelled due to persistent thunderstorms in the Cullowhee area. The teams began warming up but a lightning strike roughly 35 minutes from the start of the match forced the teams off the field. Storms lingered in the area for the next two hours ultimately forcing the cancellation of the match.
In two home matches this season, the Catamounts have played to a pair of draws. WCU and Queens finished with a scoreless tie in the home opener on Aug. 20 before a 2-2 tie against Georgia State on Aug. 31.
East Carolina is 4-2-1 following a 2-0 road loss at No. 14 Duke on Thursday night. The Pirates have wins over Campbell, George Mason, UNC Wilmington, and High Point along with tie at North Florida and losses to Florida and Duke. ECU was picked fourth in the East Division of the American Conference in the preseason poll.
Sunday’s match is the 10th all-time meeting between the schools and first since a 4-0 East Carolina win in Cullowhee during the 2016 season.
The Catamounts wrap up the nonconference portion of their schedule on Thursday, venturing to Presbyterian College for a 7 p.m. match.
