He American Association of Physicists in Medicine‘s (AAPM) The 65th Annual Meeting & Exhibit will be held July 23-27 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas.
The theme of this year’s conference is The Art of Science, The Science of Caring. In a recorded video interview, the 2023 AAPM President Ehsan Samei, PhD, FAAPM, outlined some of the highlights of this year’s show. “This theme reminds us of the privilege of being a medical physicist, a calling rooted in ingenuity, imagination and creativity,” Samei said. “That is the art that is promulgated within the field that is one of the highest incarnations of human intelligence: that is physics. And all of this was later translated into practice with a direct benefit for human health. Ours is a great calling, the dignity of caring, and the opportunity to set our thoughts and hearts toward a higher purpose. And we do this as a community collectively, hence the annual gathering.”
This years Presidential Symposium It features prominent artists and opinion leaders. On Monday, July 24, from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Samei will kick off the schedule for the President’s Symposium and speak on this year’s theme, The art of science, the science of care. The AAPM23 website describes the symposium as follows: A key theme is how art speaks to humanity’s fundamental quest: the discovery of information and our response to it, with innovation as its key methodological asset, illuminated in a presentation by the award-winning artist. Enrique Martinez Celaya. This is followed by a demonstration of how this same innovative and inquisitive impetus is brought to life in the science of care, illuminated in a presentation by exemplary scientist Kyle Myers. We then learn how Marie Curie, as the defining figure of our discipline, exemplifies these same attributes of art and science in the service of humanity, illuminated in a presentation given by the distinguished physician and author. Richard Gunderman, MD, PhD. The final speaker for the session, award-winning author, teacher, and Senior Fellow for Vocation and the Common Good for the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust, steven garberwill address how the idea of vocation can deepen our sense of self by giving us a more coherent understanding of the complex reality of our lives, our professional purposes, and our responsibility to the world.
Later in the day, the President’s Symposium presents a Informal talk, again focused on the topic AAPM23. Next are five days of world-class scientific, educational, and professional sessions that echo the theme of the conference.
